Scholar in Residence

I have spoken and taught at numerous synagogues and Jewish institutions across the US to diverse Jewish audiences. I would be thrilled to teach in your community for a Scholar in Residence Shabbat, Zoom class, or other medium!

Organizations where I have taught in the past include:

  • The Orthodox Minyan at Harvard Hillel (MA)

  • Tremont Street Shul (MA)

  • The Touro Synagogue (RI)

  • Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center (CT)

  • Beth David Synagogue (CT)

  • Congregation Sherith Israel (TN)

Sample classes include:

Water in the Desert: Mikvah in Egypt and the Wilderness

The Revelation at Sinai is referred to as the wedding of God and the Jewish people, and the waters of the Red Sea can be understood as a mikvah. We will immerse ourselves in biblical and rabbinic sources about the Israelites' mikvah use under slavery in Egypt and while wandering in the Wilderness, and dive into how this ancient use of mikvah can inform a contemporary mikvah practice.

Caring for Animals Through a Jewish Ethical Lens

Jewish pet owners are likely familiar with the mandate to feed their animals before they feed themselves. We will use this principle to explore humanity's religious and ethical obligation to the animal kingdom by reading relevant Jewish texts and having a lively group discussion.

"Serving God Lies in the Details": A Study of Gender and Commandment

We will compare and contrast the incidents of the Tree of Knowledge and the Golden Calf  - two moments in the Torah where men and women were given the same commandment at different times - and consider the implications about gender, feminism, and what it means to be commanded by God through the lens of Sarah Schenirer's writings on the topic.
